Medium: Hand-dyed silk
I work in silk using dyes and
paints to evoke colors and shapes drawn from nature. The majority of my work is scarves sized from
24” square to 15”x60”. Other work
includes hats, dresses, halter tops, sashes, bookmarks and pillow covers.
Starting with natural silk, I
prepare the material to hold the dye.
This step is crucial to attaining brilliant, rich colors that are
permanent. Traditional Japanese Shibori
techniques using complex folds and threading are mixed with twists, sinew wrap
and found objects to create an array of patterns. I apply dyes and paints using many methods
including eye droppers, spray, paintbrush, stamping and airbrush. An infusion of silver, gold and bronze add shimmering
highlights to some of the scarves. Each scarf is handmade – no two are alike. The color is then set using heat and the
excess dye is washed out. This creates a
scarf that can be washed, ironed, will not be damaged by exposure to water and
will retain its richness for many years.
Some color combinations evoke
seasons, others are drawn from animals, plants, water and the sky. I find my inspiration in everyday
objects. Each scarf is a creation from
my hands. The moment of excitement is
when the dye is set and I free the scarf from the bindings used to establish
the patterns. A new creation emerges – I
can work late into the night fueled by this thrill.
